Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer (AP/SL)

Department of Secondary and Post-School Education

The Department of Secondary and Post-School Education invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for a permanent academic position at the level of Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the criteria for appointment at the Associate Professor level.


The Department

  • The Department of Secondary and Post-School Education offers pre-service, in-service, and postgraduate programmes in teacher education.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to contribute academically across these programmes, including assuming leadership responsibilities such as programme coordination where required.

The Faculty offers a range of qualifications across three broad education sectors:

  • Higher Education

  • Primary and Early Childhood Education

  • Secondary and Post-School Education, Training, and Development Practices

  • These programmes are offered through three departments and several affiliated centres and institutes.

Main Objectives

All academic staff are responsible for:

  • Teaching and learning (knowledge dissemination)

  • Research (knowledge creation)

  • Community engagement

  • Professional involvement beyond the University

  • In addition, academics are expected to undertake administrative, management, and/or leadership responsibilities at departmental, Faculty, and/or institutional levels.

At the levels of Professor and Associate Professor, incumbents are required to provide academic leadership in:

  • Teaching and learning

  • Research

  • Professional engagement in the field

  • Community engagement

  • Institutional governance

  • Leadership contributions should be evident at departmental, Faculty, and institutional levels.

Job Requirements

Associate Professor

  • A PhD in Science Education (required)

  • Experience teaching Science Education and at least one additional STEM Education discipline (preferably Information and Communication Technology/Educational Technology)

  • Extensive teaching experience at post-school level (school-level teaching experience will be an advantage)

  • Proven supervision experience of Master’s and PhD students in Science Education to completion

  • Supervision experience in ICT in Education, Technology Education, Engineering Education, or Mathematics Education will be an advantage

  • A national and emerging international research profile in Science Education (a focus on integrated STEM Education will be an advantage)

  • A demonstrated track record of administration, management, and/or academic leadership


Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD in Science Education (required)

  • Experience teaching Science Education and at least one additional STEM Education discipline (preferably Information and Communication Technology/Educational Technology)

  • Teaching experience at post-school level (school-level teaching experience will be an advantage)

  • Supervision experience of at least Master’s students in Science Education to completion

  • Supervision experience in ICT in Education, Technology Education, Engineering Education, or Mathematics Education will be an advantage

  • An emerging national research profile in Science Education (a focus on integrated STEM Education will be an advantage)

  • A demonstrated track record of administration, management, and/or academic leadership

Selection Process (Provisional)

Remuneration (Per Annum)

Associate Professor

  • Basic Pensionable Salary: R987,607

  • Cost to Company (Approximate): R1,270,054

Senior Lecturer

  • Basic Pensionable Salary: R826,322

  • Cost to Company (Approximate): R1,069,564

  • While the post is advertised as permanent, the University reserves the right to appoint on a fixed-term contract of not less than three years
